Frizzy hair can be caused by a number of things, including changes in the weather, shower routine, diet, heat styling and ingredients found in commercial hair-care products. Genetics also play a part, as some people are born with hair that is naturally more prone to frizzing.

Regardless of the cause, if you’re looking for information on how to get rid of frizzy hair, take a look at our recommendations below.

Have Frizz? Avoid Sulfates

Sulfates, particularly sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate, are common ingredients used in shampoos, as well as many other hair care products.

Sulfates are used in shampoo because they are strong cleaning agents that can easily remove dirt and grime from your hair and scalp. However, sulfates also strip away your hair’s natural oils, leaving it dry and frizzy.

Look For Glycerin

When choosing a shampoo, look for products that contain glycerin. Glycerin-based shampoos reduce frizz and help to define your curls, making them a great alternative to sulfate-based shampoos.

However, it’s worth noting that, for some people, glycerin can have the opposite effect and make hair more frizzy.

Experimenting with different types of shampoo is the best way to find the right one to suit your hair.

Swap Your Towel For a T-shirt

Rubbing wet hair with a towel produces friction, a common cause of frizz, and may also damage the cuticles. Swap your towel for an old t-shirt, as the material is much kinder to frizzy hair.

When you’ve finished washing and rinsing your hair, use your fingers to gently squeeze the water from your hair, then wrap it in a t-shirt to soak up the rest of the moisture.

Dry Hair Strands Naturally

Heat damage is another common cause of frizz. Blow drying and heat styling can both leave hair looking frizzy and dry. Allowing your hair to dry naturally gives your hair chance to soak up some moisture.

Alternatively, you can use the cool setting on your blow dryer.

Have a Shampoo Break

Try skipping the shampoo once or twice a week and using only conditioner to wash your hair. Conditioners can usually clean your hair effectively, but they contain less of the harsh ingredients that can strip the natural oils from your hair.

Protect Your Locks From the Sun

Blow dryers and heated styling appliances are not the only things that can cause heat damage; exposure to the sun can also damage your hair.

Use a heat protection spray and wear a hat when the sun is at its hottest.

Information About the Gym

Sweating can increase frizz, as the salt present in sweat dehydrates the hair. Applying a leave-in conditioner before your workout can help to protect your hair strands.

You can also buy hydrating masks that will put some moisture back into your hair.

Sleep on Silk to Avoid Frizz

Cotton pillowcases and those made from artificial materials absorb the moisture from your hair. Silk pillowcases can reduce frizz by helping hair to retain moisture and preventing friction.

Alternatively, you can choose to wrap your hair in a silk scarf before going to bed. Be sure to pack one when you are going to travel.

Use Oil Treatments

Oil treatments help to repair dry and damaged hair and reduce frizz. There are several commercial products available, but you can also make your own at home.

Simply smooth a small amount of oil, such as coconut, olive or argan oil, onto wet hair, wrap in a towel and leave on for up to an hour. Rinse thoroughly and wash your hair as normal.

Choose the Right Styling Products

While there are many different styling products available to reduce frizz, you may need to experiment to find the right products for your hair. If you have dry or damaged hair, some anti-frizz styling products can make the problem worse.

Finally, it’s important to a eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water, as nutritional deficiencies and dehydration can both cause or worsen frizzy hair. Smoking, alcohol and some medications can also dry out your hair. I hope these tips have helped you learn how to get rid of frizzy hair and tame your do.
